What Is 'Real' Beauty?

Hi everyone! So below is an opinion column I had to write for school, I thought it was extremely relevant and that I should share it with everyone. I'd just like to say, I chose this topic for my column because I have struggled with the media's representation of beauty and what women should look like. I say this should be NO MORE! Women, men, girls, boys, EVERYONE should be happy with their appearances, everyone should feel beautiful. So below is my very thought out opinion column, I hope you enjoy it.

Beauty is a topic that doesn’t go astray in many women’s day to day lives. From clothes and make-up to gym and dieting – it’s all constantly there being advertised, talked about and drilled into our brains. With technology being readily available and children accessing it younger and younger, young girls are being pushed into a whirlpool from day one in life. To be thin, NO, now be curvy, NO, now be thin, NO, now be curvy. Why isn’t the media telling us to love ourselves for who we are, not what we look like? With constant pressure to be beautiful, what affect is this having on young women?
Current campaign circulating ‘Real Women Have Curves’ features photo’s of bigger women being compared to thin women. In one promotional photo the Victoria Secret ‘Love Yourself’ campaign which is promoted with thin Victoria Secret Angels is placed above a photo of the Dove ‘Love Yourself’ campaign, which is promoted with plus size models. Another promotional photo being shared for the campaign is one with Marilyn Monroe, pointing out all her curves in the right places, beside this photo is one of a girl with anorexia. Below both photo’s is a caption “I’d rather a girl like this,” (pointing at Monroe), “than a girl like this.” (Pointing at the girl with anorexia). How else could this affect girls than make them feel insecure about their body?
Left: Victoria Secret 'Love Yourself' Capmpaign. Right: Dove 'Love Yourself' Campaign.

The effect of this campaign is shown on 16 year old, UK model, and social media star Cemone Warren’s Facebook page. Originally she posted a photo of herself, in a crop top and leggings. This photo received so many negative comments about how thin she was, she removed it. She later reposted the photo on the 19th February 2013 with the caption So I deleted my other photo that was like this because all i got was 'too skinny, too skinny eat' ect, I eat loads & just don't put on weight, so why should I hide it? i'm not ashamed, f*ck you.” Even after stating she simply can not put on weight she still received comments such as the following To anyone that says I eat loads and can't put on weight. Here's a way to fix that problem. Eat more. And if that don't work. Eat more than that” and, “She is a good looking girl but does need to put on a little bit of weight..” and finally, “Holy fuck please go to McDonald's or something”. At the same time all these negative comments were flooding hundreds of comments were also young girls stating they too had the same problem – they just had a fast metabolism.
Cemone Warren's photo posted to Facebook.

Just two and three years ago, skinny shamming didn’t exist. All the negative was on ‘curvy’ or ‘bigger’ women. DailyMail.co article from October 2010 by Fiona Macrae titled ‘Being Thin Makes Any Women Happier Than A Man’ stated that what makes a woman her happiest is her dress size and weight. Another article from Forbes.com, June 2011 by Lisa Quast explained that being thin translated into a bigger pay check for women. It states that Timothy A. Judge from the University of Florida and Daniel M Cable from London Business School “set out to test the norms that society holds very different body standards for men versus women.” The article then states that their research found
• ‘For men, increases in weight have positive linear effects of pay but at diminished returns at above-average levels of weight.’
• Gaining weight is more damaging to women’s earnings than to men. ‘For women, increases in weight have negative linear effects on pay, but the negative effects are stronger at below-average than at above-average weight levels.’”
August 9 2013, Jasmine Bala of Girls Globe wrote ‘On Skinny – Shamming: Not All Real Women Have Curves.’ Bala comes from both points of campaigns, and explains how “In the light of body-acceptance and fighting the body ideal, it is a myth that thin women have it easy.” She goes into detail how dangerous it is to say that one body type is more worthy of beauty than another. Some very vaild points are made on skinny-shamming, the most vaild being “If you wouldn’t call a women fat, why would you want to call a woman thin?”
March 28th 2013, Amanda Russel, a fitness guru who posts workout video’s on YouTube released a video titled ‘Why Are You So Skinny?’ In this video, her friend interviews her on what it’s like to be skinny and the criticism she receives. Her friend then expresses just how much it upsets her to see people tell Amanda that she is “Too skinny,’ or that she shouldn’t be posting videos as she is a “bad influence on young children.”
Better Health Victoria on Eating disorders claims that “Westmeand Hospital in Sydney and the Royal Childrens Hospital in Melbourne have observed that eating disorder cases have increased substantially in the under 12 age group.” This is both ends of the scale, rapid weight GAIN and rapid weight LOSS. 12 years old and younger suffering from eating disorders more now than they ever have. Why? Because with easier access to the media now than ever, children are witnessing the media’s portrayal of so called ‘beauty’. How the media wants us to look, or what they want us to buy so that we can look that way. It’s affecting children, and in my opinion, needs to stop now.

The media should be telling us to love ourselves for who we are, not telling us to change our body to be perfect.

Girlfriend Australia Article.

Hi all!
Long time since I've posted here, and I'm very sorry. I am hoping to share my journey with you all a bit often now - organise my time a lot better.
Today's post I've decided to share with you all an article that is my story. During M.E./CFS/FM and EDS awareness month I contacted various magazines, newspapers and news channels etc. The only one to get back to me was Girlfriend Magazine Australia. They wanted me to share my story and I did. Though they left out many things, for example how much support I recieved from my dad (not just my mum) I'm glad I still got to share my story. I was a little upset with the title, but I understand what editors can be like. So here is my story that was shared in Girlfriend Magazine Australia - I hope you enjoy it.

(This article was in the August issue of Girlfriend).

Compression Stockings - The Search

So lately, I've been on a bit of a search for compression stockings! But not just any, I want ones that I can get away with wearing anywhere, and I mean ANYWHERE.
Obviously, as an 18 year old girl, I'm a bit fashion obsessed, so when I first had to wear compression stockings in hospital, and saw just how UGLY they were, I was completely put off! Then just a few months ago, I decided that compression stockings had to be an option, and would help, but was there such a thing as fashionable compression stockings? The answer is YES!
I asked on multiple support groups I'm a part of, and I got the link to an amazing blog, that has heaps of information on them, check it out here.

So now comes the time, for me to find the money to afford these now, fashionable compression stockings.
Do you have fashionable compression stockings, or do you get by with just general ones? Feel free to comment and let me know, or maybe send me an email!

Until next time, much love

Health Update

I know there are other posts I promised to do before anything else, but I thought I should update you all on my health and how things are going.
In this first half of the year, I saw a Rheumatologist, that didn't go so well and didn't make much difference with getting advice on any of my conditions. The medication for my POTS is working well, and I'm so glad I got this diagnosis, it helps a lot, I just drink some powerade, or eat something with lots of salt when I'm out and about, and start feeling weak and dizzy.
Since I've turned 18, I can now finally have some tests done that were being refused until I was 18. So when I have my next round of blood tests, I'll be tested properly for PCOS. To update you on that, I had to stop taking the contraceptive pill in February as it was making me physically sick, and stopped me menstruating all together. One of my doctors has put me on something that would reduce the blood to take during menstruation only! It kind of has helped with it, but it means I'm still menstruating every two weeks, having all the pains that come with it etc.
Also, now that I'm 18, I can be reassessed for Fibromyalgia, I'm hoping that in if I am diagnosed with it, that we can then find more ways to help with my aches and pains, and injuries.
My M.E./CFS started playing up really bad this week, which I didn't notice until I crashed yesterday, in the toilet! Do you know how much that sucks! haha
I had to call out for my boyfriend, as he was the only one in the same area of the house, I thought I was just sick at first, feeling like I had to vomit, then I got the symptoms I get whenever I crash, seeing colours all around, hearing going fuzzy, feeling cold but sweating really bad, and then I also started hearing things which was weird! Jeremy told me that I was as white as a ghost, including my lips.
I now can barely walk around the house to go to the bathroom, or get a glass of water, so staying in my brothers room tonight I think! Whenever I have a crash, I can also barely get dressed, do my hair, and even typing this is really hard!

Oh! And a month and a half ago I started B12 injections fortnightly to help with my 'brain fog' with my M.E./CFS and it has helped! I didn't realise until this last injection, and mum noticed it too!

Here are is a photo of me yesterday evening, after I improved a bit.

365 Days of Positivity - Days 15-21

My third week of positivity! Each day it's getting harder and harder to think of things, but I do! And it's helping so much, I'm not feeling as depressed because I'm always looking for something positive to write for that day.
Day 15
I have always enjoyed fashion. I remember loving playing dress ups as a child and pretending to be a fashion critique.
My love for fashion has created opportunities I never could have dream of, one being the success of my fashion blog. Being sent things to review is amazing! Not only that, but the friendships I get to make in the fashion world is so amazing and perfect. Fashion has made me even more of a special person, and I need to remember that.
Day 16
I see caring for animals as an important aspect of life. After all, we were once at a state of 'animal' and I'm sure if we looked back thousands of years we would see us humans as animals. People eat meat, have pets etc. No matter what the animal it should be given respect and be cared for.
Day 17
It is important to want to learn. People all over the world don't get that opportunity, whether they live in a state of poverty, or they're too sick to go to school, or they are carers for their parents. I honesty see education as a gift, and we really should cherish and use it to our advantage. We could be exploring the stars if we really tried.

Day 18
In a world that is changing we do need to be open minded. We need to accept who others are, how they are born, how they choose to be, how they look and how they act. If you don't like someone for their decisions, for who they are you need to assess why, really think about it, and you need to do yourself and that person a favour, and live your own life. This goes for everything, for yourself, if you don't like who you are, be open minded and explore who you are, who you can be.

Day 19
Loyalty and dedication is something that is rare and I hold onto it so tight. The more loyal and dedicated I am, the better.

Day 20
Just because I'm Catholic doesn't mean I should shy away from the changes happening in the world. I complete support Equal Rights for every human being. Just because you love someone of the same gender, doesn't mean you shouldn't get the same right the rest of the population has. Just because the bible says God created the world in 7 days doesn't mean that it was 7 EARTH days, nor does it mean that there wasn't dinosaurs, or that we didn't start out as something else.
Day 21
Everything in my life is a gift. Every single thing I have, someone else out there, has not even 1% of what that's worth. Food, clothes, a roof over my head are all basic things everyone takes for granted. I'm so appreciative that I'm lucky enough to have such simple things that others go without.

365 Days of Positivity - Days 8-14

Here is my second week's worth of positivity. I know I'm a bit late in uploading, but better late than never!

Day 8
I see reading, and love of books as something so important. To learn you need to read, to understand and explore all forms of literature. It doesn't even have to be what everyone considers literature, a comic, a short novel, a poem, everything from words to symbols is so important, and one persons personality and creativity can be expanded through reading.

Day 9
I feel so strongly about helping others and giving second chances, even third, fourth and twentyth chances! Yes, sometimes it's never a good idea to give someone another chance, but if I can not give others another chance, I should definately not expect that they would give me another chance. If everyone helped one another, the world would be such a different place.
Day 10
I love that I look like my mum, it show's she is my mum, and the fact I am so much like her, I just have so much to thank her for.
Looking like my mum is perfect, amazing, everything I could ever want. I'd never want to look any other way.
And even though I'm not very confident in my appearance, I see my mum as so beautiful, so I don't understand why I can't see myself the same.
I love you so much mum.
Day 11
Even now, writing these positive things, and getting stuck on a day, unable to think of what to write for that day, I don't give up, I think all through the day what I could write. I just don't give up.
Day 12
I am so proud of having, and being able to use my imagination. So many people lack of, or don't use their imagination. You NEED to use it, it is essential in discovering new things, creating new things, everything. Life would be boring without imagination.
Day 13
I am actually so proud that I won baby competitions. I have trophies and ribbons and it just makes me so happy. It's hard to think that I was once a cute baby. And when I see photo's of myself so much younger, I can't help but think I was so much more cute and pretty then, than I am now.
Day 14
I can handle pain. Yes, some pain I don't handle well, but I still push through it. I could have a dislocated hip and I'd still walk around, doing my own thing just because I could handle the pain, I could block it out to an extent.

M.E destroy's lives and I want to help make a difference.

Lemon Water in the Morning.

Last week whilst in Brisbane for a specialist appointment, my grandparents were also there. My Gran had recently read about the benefits of drink lemon water in the morning, before you eat or drink anything else. I tried it, then decided to do my own research on it.
I currently am having half a lemon to one tall glass of water each morning. It's a great refreshing morning start.

What have I learnt so far?
  1. Aids digestion. It helps with symptoms of indigestion such as heartburn, belching and bloating.
  2. Lemon is a source of vitamins and minerals. It contains Vitamin C, B, riboflavin, calcium, phosphorus and magnesium.
  3. Lemons increase the rate of urination in the body, therefor helping keep the Urinary Tract healthy. It also means flushing out of unwanted materials more often, keeping your body more cleansed.
  4. Lemon helps liver eliminate toxins and waste. It helps the Liver carry out its functions more efficiently.
  5. Clears skin, and anti aging. The vitamin C along with other antioxidants help keep the skin clear from blemishes, and wrinkles from forming and helps them disappear! Vitamin C is also a vital component in having clear glowing skin.
  6. Energizes you and enhances your mood. Lemons are one of the few foods with more negative charged ions, providing your body with more energy. The scent of lemon also has mood enhancing and energizing properties. It can brighten your mood, clear your mind and it also helps with anxiety and depression.
  7. Lemon can act as a blood purifier
  8. Lemon is one of natures antiseptics
  9. Lemon helps healing. In Ancient Egypt, it was believed lemon could cure some poisons. This may or may not be true, but due to it being one of natures antiseptics, it can help with wound healing, and if rubbed on acne, it might help the acne disappear. It also has anti-inflammatory properties and Vitamin C is an essential nutrient for good health and recovery of stress and injury. Not only this, but lemons have some antibacterial and antiviral properties, good for helping with a cold or flu. It can help with chills and fevers, and it has in some cases, helped clear eczema.
  10. Lemon aids in losing weight. Lemon is high in pectin fiber, which helps fight hunger cravings. Given the liver slows down the metabolism when it's full of waste, the fact lemon helps clear that waste, means your metabolism becomes faster, therefore you are able to lose weight faster. Lemon obviously can not do it all alone, but it sure does help.
  11. Relieves respiratory problems and freshens breath. Lemon can help get rid of chest infections and clear away those annoying coughs! It's also been said to help those with asthma and allergies. Some have said it helps with tooth pain and gingivitis. Be aware that citric acid can damage your tooth enamel, but no, don't brush your teeth straight after having anything with citrus in! (It's always best to wait at least 30 minutes after eating anything to brush your teeth as this will not damage your enamel). You can drink some lemon water after brushing your teeth, or some time after, to freshen your breath, if you're worried about the citrus, after your lemon water you can always drink a glass of normal water to rinse your teeth. Chewing on lemon slices after every meal will also help with keeping your breath fresh.
  12.  Lemon can sooth bug bites and stings
  13.  Lemon acid can stimulate stomach acid and activity in your stomach muscles
  14.  Lemon oil has vessel strengthening properties.
I've been drinking lemon water every morning for over a week and I'm already feeling so much better, especially in the mornings. It's helping clear my skin, and definately my breath.
Do you drink lemon water or use a lemon product? What do you find the benefits are?

365 Days of Positivity - Days 1-7

Everyday for the next 365 days I am going to write something positive about myself. Whether something I like about my body, a talent, an achievement, anything!
Everytime I'm feeling down, I go to this collection and randomly choose one. I will then have to write about it until my mood has improved - I can only write about it in a positive way and hopefully this results in a more positive happier Coralee.
Whenever my depression, anxiety etc gets bad, I let it take over, I barely make it through those dark times, but some certain people have helped me through each of these times and I have so much to thank them for.

I believe I owe to the people who have helped me survive this far, to do everything I possibly can to make myself a happier, person; to create the opportunities for me to be happy, to make it through, and not always rely on others to get me through the dark, tough times.

The above photo is what I wrote for day 1. Along with it, I said this Today is step one, starting with something small.
I have so many people to thank for making it to this day, so many people who have helped me through the tough and the not so tough and so many people who have inspired me to take on a journey of positivity to help myself.

Day 2!
I decided to write this, particularly because I often get so upset about the things that get in the way of me achieving my dreams. But look, I've gotten this far! That obviously means something. This is a good reminder, that even if it takes longer than I hope, I will achieve my dreams.

Day 3.
Sometimes I need to remember that my of my strongest points in my personality is my passion. If you start talking to me about a topic I'm passionate about, I will not shut up, especially if I'm trying to make a point about that topic. I want people to listen, and to think and I believe that that is a very special thing.

Day 4.
I really do enjoy cooking, and that's going to help me so much through life. I can cook from just about anything, so when life brings me minimal food, I will be able to help my tastebuds survive.

Day 5.
My family have done so much for me, they are always trying to help me achieve my dreams, they are always supporting me, looking out for me and looking after me. My brothers and my sister are beautiful people, and I would never give them up for anything.

Day 7
Cello is definately something that makes me who I am. I've always loved it, I've always clung on to it, it's always been what makes me happy. Exploring life with my cello is something that's held me together for a long time.
And the only reason I am able to say this, is thanks to some amazing people who have helped me grow on the cello so far in life. Thank-you.

Day 7
Writing has given me such a big opportunity to express myself. Not only has it helped me through the tough, it also has helped me understand the good, and remember the great. If I didn't have the encouragement from my friends and family to start writing again, I probably wouldn't be writing positively for 365 days.
